We wish to give our guests the best, most authentic nature experiences whatever the time of year. All our activities and experiences are based on the same idea – that you get to enjoy the things which we love to do in our free time.
The word Riksgränsen means national border. It is not only a border between the two countries Sweden and Norway but also a border between two different types of nature. One day you can be in the heart of the wilderness of Swedish Lapland and the next day you are in the stunning Norwegian fjord landscape. And all that in hiking distance from Niehku! We cross our fingers for the borders to open this summer, as they have been closed for a while due to COVID-19.
Niehku’s summer season starts at the end of June and finishes at the beginning of October. Early summer season you will experience the magic light of the midnight sun and towards the end, nature will shift to the sparkling colours of autumn. The first snowflakes might start to fall. We have our own hiking guides that will lead and teach you about nature, customs and history.
In summer Niehku is open from end of June to end of September, four days a week: from Thursday to Sunday.
HELI-HIKING AND HIKING
With the help of a helicopter, we’ll take you to remote, rarely visited sites across the mountain landscape. Travelling light, we’ll hike deep into nature, far from the highroads and waymarked routes. We’ll explore remote mountains and valleys, and you’ll get to see places visited by few other people. After a day filled with fresh mountain air and unforgettable experiences, a sauna and maybe even a much needed massage await. The adventure then continues around the dinner table, rounded off perfectly in front of a roaring fire in the company of good friends. The length of the hiking routes can be tailored to individual groups.
One of our favourite outings (when borders are open!) is to hike along the old Rallarvägen route, which starts right outside Niehku Mountain Villa and ends on the shores of Rombaksbotten on the Norwegian west coast. This is an unforgettable day-hike along the legendary route, which was taken by navvies during the major railway construction at the end of the 1800s. You’ll hike across the dramatic mountain landscape all the way to the Norwegian Atlantic coastline with its wonderful fjords. We’ll then embark on a spectacular boat trip to Narvik, where a car will collect us and take us back to Niehku.
This is a hike for everyone, highly recommended. It’s equally as beautiful on a mountain bike.
At Niehku Mountain Villa we propose a long weekend hiking programme, tailored for three nights at the lodge, with and without the use of helicopter. We customise the hikes depending on the level of the group. Our hikes are suitable for anyone keen to experience a few fabulous days in the mountains of the north.
Long weekend hiking programme
The area around Riksgränsen offers endless opportunities for any adventure. It is home to a vast number of tracks and trails, lakes and watercourses, and of course high mountains.
Besides hiking there are countless excellent mountain bike trails in our surroundings. You can climb Kebnekaise, Sweden’s highest mountain, paddle a canoe or go fishing. In the Atlantic fjords along the Norwegian coast, you can fish for cod and other whitefish by boat in Arctic waters. Only your imagination sets the limit. Alongside our long weekend hiking programmes we also propose a large selection of one-day activities.
